I took a chance and purchased this mic from the seller with the lowest price. The sound is terrible when plugged into my Kodak ZI8. I paid less than ten bucks plus shipping so I'm not too upset. Turns out what I recieved is a knock-off. If you are paying much less than the retail price for this item, be cautious. Do some searches for ECM-DS70P bootleg to find out more.
Got it really cheap and it was perfect for recording meetings on the go. The sound quality won't win awards but for this price (below $18) I really can't complain.
Sony is a popular brand name to counterfeit. Well, go to YouTube and type in "Sony ECM-DS70P fake Mic" Yep. The YouTube video gives a close look at the fake and the Real Thing. I generally over-research anything I'm thinking of buying; I was was thinking of getting an external microphone for a camcorder. A few user-provided photos at Amazon are definitely of the fake. This looked great and the price was too good to be true. Like the $20.00 Rolex watches that are a comic cliche, this particular item is one to look out for. The one-star reviews on Amazon are most likely of knock-offs.
WAY too good. Sony sells this item on its website for $74.99. (The video was uploaded by someone who bought a ECM-DS70P for five bucks, by the way). Electronic goods are easy to copy - at least, the way they LOOK is - so I try to purchase electrical goodies directly from Amazon or the manufacturer anytime I can.
not really awesome but still very good for recording. I recommend this product for everyone who likes recording music like live performance. Bottom line is, the recording is CLEAR without any distortions. recording is loud and clear. Sound separation is ok. you can add stereo effects using software like SONY soundforge. price is nice too.
mostly, but it would be good for birds, possibly for music. vents, the click of a door opening, outside birds, etc, with perfect clarity. I use it for recording lectures, meetings, etc. I haven't done such a test yet. I have used mine with various tape and MD recorders for ~3 yrs: This is the best small mic I have ever had (been recdording stuff since 1975). In general, this is a top-level mic, especially considering it's small size, and low cost. sounds like rustling paper, hissing of air cond. In my use, I can definitely hear high freq.
And, contrary to the review by "Mark", it is VERY versatile, can be used w/any "plug-in-power" recorder. from the mic. It supposedly has 100-15000 Hz response, but I bet it's much better than that. Peoples' voices sound absolutely true, using the mic. In my usual use, I find it very sensitive, not always found in these small mic's; absolutely low-noise, that is with very low signal levels, you can amplify the signal to very high levels and not hear hum, hiss, etc. All my other small mics are not as good. That means mic power is suplied by the recorder; non- PIP mic's need their own power supply, usually 9V batteries in a PS box are used. (paid $65 for my 1st one)
